Interview Summary
Alex Nash (she/her/hers) served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica from 2018 to 2020 in the Education sector. Alex’s father was a PCV in the Philippines and met her mother during his service. Alex studied music education in undergrad and taught at an elementary school in Columbus, Ohio after graduation. She applied to Peace Corps Jamaica and was selected to serve in cohort Group 89. Training was conducted in Hellshire, St. Catherine and Highgate, St. Mary. Volunteers lived with host families and studied Jamaican Patois. Alex was assigned to the community of St. Mary’s in the parish of St. Elizabeth to serve as a Primary Literacy Adviser at St. Mary’s Primary and Infant School. She worked with grade 1 through 6 students in reading intervention. She also secured culturally relevant book donations and worked with the principal to obtain a grant to convert a storage room into a school library space. About two months before her planned departure date, PCVs were evacuated due to COVID-19. The interview discusses her experiences in Jamaica, the hospitality of Jamaican people, the importance of a peer support network, and the impact of Peace Corps on her life.Interview Accession
