Interview Summary

Bill Evans played basketball for the University of Kentucky from 1950-1955. In this interview, he discusses being offered a scholarship to the University of Kentucky without ever meeting Harry Lancaster or Adolph Rupp. He tells a story about fouling in a game against St. Johns which they won by 40 points, however Coach Rupp was still angry at him. Evans talks about the team not being allowed to play games during the 1952-1953 season due to a point-shaving scandal perpetrated by former players. He talks about his third season being eligible to play, during which they were undefeated. However, three members of the team were ineligible to play in the tournament so the team chose to forfeit. He describes losing against Georgia Tech at Memorial Coliseum which broke the 129 home game winning streak. He talks about joining the Air Force and being a member of the Air Force All-Star Team. This led to him being picked for the 1956 U.S. Olympic basketball team which went on to win the gold medal. Evans talks about his interest and success in tennis. He talks about the relationship between Adolph Rupp and Harry Lancaster as coaches and talks about his relationships with his teammates.
