Interview Summary
Jon "Skip" Fruytier served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a agricultural development program in the Dominican Republic from 1962-1964. He tells stories about his application to the Peace Corps, orientation in New York City and training in Puerto Rico. He talks about living and working in various agricultural projects and teaching in villages in Western Dominican Republic, including developing the first experimental farm in the country. He also discusses the political situation in the DR during service and the hostile climate faced by an African American volunteer with whom he served. He discusses medical issues during the onboarding process and being evacuated to Puerto Rico with viral pneumonia. He talks about returning to the DR after service to teach English and teaching in Colombia and Ecuador. He discusses adopting an abandoned Dominican boy and his hosting foreign students in the US.Interview Accession
