Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jack Allison recalls his motivation to join the Peace Corps, and events during PC training that led him to serve as a PCV in children’s health in Malawi 1966-1969. He describes the village and house where he lived, his work in his clinic and nearby villages, and deep friendships with Malawi colleagues. He talks about songs he composed and recorded in the local language, and their impact in country-wide health campaigns. He relates fascinating stories of working with both a traditional medicine man and Western medical professionals, and of touring Malawi for five months to promote public health. He mentions his memoir The Warm Heart of Africa, and of donating all proceeds to Malawi NGO’s. He describes returning to Malawi after 25 years, and his on-going service to Malawi and the Peace Corps. He reflects on the impact his Peace Corps service has had on his life and career.
