Interview Summary

Philip Mummert, a former TVA employee, begins the interview by recalling how he was hired at TVA. Mummert then gives an overview of his career at TVA. The interviewee also discusses his favorite and least favorite aspects of being a TVA employee. Mummert details his background in environmental work in the 1970s, prior to joining TVA. Mummert shares his memories of a rural recycling program he assisted in implementing and a non-profit community recycling program TVA assisted in the 1980s. Mummert talks of how TVA-assisted rural recycling programs have been able to be so successful. TVA's technical assistance to help advance rural waste management is explored. The interviewee explains how his work at TVA relates to TVA's mission. Recognition of Mummert's work at TVA outside the Tennessee Valley is examined. Mummert lists some of the more challenging aspects of his work. Mummert details his role in planning a TVA public-relations boat tour down the Tennessee River, conceived by John Waters (a former member of the TVA Board of Directors). To conclude the interview, Mummert shares his final thoughts on working at TVA.
