Interview Summary
Earl Slone attended the Louisville College of Pharmacy (now part of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy) as a student before becoming dean of the school from 1946-1966. In this interview he discusses his family background and his childhood experiences that led him to a career in pharmacy. He talks about the history of the Louisville College of Pharmacy, which he says was founded by individual druggists attempting to broaden the education of their apprentices. He talks about the location of the school and why it was relocated and remodeled over the years. He talks about the faculty and administration of the Louisville College of Pharmacy, including president C. Lewis Diehl, Dean Oscar Dilly, and Dean Gordon Curry, among others. He describes a typical day as a student at the college and talks about working while attending school.Slone talks about practicing pharmacy at the Louisville General Hospital after his graduation. He talks about continuing his education at the University of Chicago before returning to the Louisville College of Pharmacy as dean. He talks about the conditions he set before accepting the position as dean, and discusses the merger between the Louisville College of Pharmacy and the University of Kentucky.
Slone talks about how the field of pharmacy and pharmacy education has changed over the years, and discusses how drug laws have affected pharmacists and the number of people addicted to illicit substances.
