Interview Summary

Fannie Lewis was born in Leslie County in 1906 and attended a one-room school through the third grade. Her family gathered ginseng--"sang"--and other roots in order to buy coffee, salt, and sugar. Lewis recalls that there were no cars, radios, churches, or doctors on White Oak Creek, where she grew up, and her child was delivered by a "granny woman." The nearest store was eight miles away, and the only transportation was mule or walking. No social activities were held, and there was essentially nothing to do in her locality.
