Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Hannah Rogers served in China from 2018 to 2020 as an English teacher and was evacuated February of 2020 due to COVID-19. Her site placement was at Lanzhou Gongye Xueyuan (Lanzhou Institute of Technology) in Lanzhou, Gansu where she taught English and non-English majors. Hannah had previous experience teaching university students but gained a new understanding of teaching in the Chinese school system. She developed relationships with her site-mate and other volunteers, her counterpart and other co-workers, Peace Corps staff, and other host country nationals. She also talks about the food in Gansu, her experience with the Chinese language, and her travels. Hannah discusses Peace Corps China’s consolidation and evacuation in early 2020, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic which has greatly adjusted the plans she had for after Peace Corps. She concludes by talking about the permanent closing of the Peace Corps China program in China, and her hopes for the program’s eventual re-opening.
