Interview with Matthew Skros, August 12, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Matthew Skros served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Albania from January 2020 to March 2020, when he was evacuated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Matthew was interested in public service from a young age. He initially considered military service, with Peace Corps as a second option. Due to a prolonged application process, Matthew decided to take an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps assignment, doing disaster response work nationwide. After beginning his AmeriCorps service, he re-applied to Peace Corps, and was accepted for Albania. Language and culture training for his cohort was the village of Gjadër, near Lezhë. Matthew lived with a host family during training. Approximately two weeks before completion of training, Peace Corps evacuated volunteers due to COVID-19. Since returning to the U.S., Matthew has been volunteering with AmeriCorps-VISTA, and has re-applied to Peace Corps.Interview Accession
