Interview Summary

Interview with Karen Allen - Virginia

In this interview, Karen Allen begins by discussing her childhood in Richmond, Virginia in the1950?s. She shares stories from her time in Tunisia in the Peace Corps, her perspectives on the Vietnam War and marching on Washington in the sixties and again in the early 2000?s. She talks about the women?s movement and wearing pants for the first time to school.

Karen continues on to tell the stories of her three births. Influenced by the natural birth
movement and Ina May Gaskin, Karen recounts her challenges of giving birth in a hospital setting. She compares her own births to what she knows of her mother?s experience, giving birth under sedation in the 1940?s and the difference in her daughters? choices to give birth at home.

She speaks about the medical model of care and her disappointment in that system.
She shares memories from living in Soviet Russia when her first child was 6 months old
where she and her husband smuggled bibles in the 1980?s. She concludes by speaking about working as a hospice nurse and its similarities to midwifery care.
