Interview with Susan Miller, January 17, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Susan Miller served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic, from 1984 through 1986, in the Forestry and Natural Resources program. While studying Marine Biology in grad school, Susan became interested in agroforestry. She knew of Peace Corps from the Kennedy Era, and saw volunteering as a way to gain hands on experience through service to others. Training for her cohort included Spanish language, culture, and job skills. It was conducted in suburbs outside of Santo Domingo, where she stayed with a host family. Susan was assigned to Janico, a town in the north-central region. She lived in nearby Cebu. Susan’s job was to work with Plan Sierra, an NGO combatting de-forestation. She traveled to each school in the district to train teachers, and work with students setting up tree nurseries. Susan discusses her living conditions; friendships with local families; and work experiences. After Peace Corps Susan entered grad school at U.C. Berkeley, and returned to the Dominican Republic for her Master’s research.
