Interview with Sunaree Marshall, September 6, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Sunaree Marshall is the daughter of a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. Her mother is from Thailand. Marshall was always around Peace Corps people and traveling and exploring in her youth. She founded a community service club in high school. Marshall studied architecture and engineering at University of California, Berkeley. Marshall preferred serving in Asia and received a youth development project assignment in Mongolia. The new project was still experimenting and learning how to engage youth. She was based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, at an alternative school for children who were starting primary school several years later than normal or had missed extended periods of schooling for a variety of reasons. Marshall taught a variety of courses: art, dance, math, competitions between students, etc. Along with a social worker, she also introduced a life skills curriculum. Because of friction with a new school director, Marshall was moved to another site and then she extended for a third year as a Peace Corps Volunteer Leader. As a PCVL, she helped with Pre-Service Training, career advice for PCVs, grants management, and the Volunteer newsletter.Interview Accession
