Interview Summary
Dinwiddie Lampton Jr., former president of American Life and Accident Insurance Company of Kentucky in Louisville and an accomplished horseman, recalls early experiences with Saddlebred horses, winning the 1941 Iroquois Steeplechase in Nashville, and establishing the Hardscuffle Steeplechase. For most of his later years, he was best known for driving horses to carriage (also known as coaching). Elizabeth Whitcomb Lampton was Lampton's second wife whom he met in New York at a driving event. She recalls her passion for coaching and shares stories of her and Mr. Lampton driving four in hand at the Junior League Horse Show and other competitions. The purchase by Mr. Lampton of historic Elmendorf Farm in Lexington is also discussed.Interview Accession
