Interview Summary
Craig Martin Chavis Jr. served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru from 2014 to 2016, in Community Economic Development. His training cohort was Peru 23. Prior to Peace Corps service, he studied Spanish and International Business, including Study Abroad in Costa Rica and Spain. He earned an MBA from the University of Tampa, where he met a Peace Corps recruiter. Peace Corps training was conducted in Chaclacayo. He stayed with a host family in the Yanacoto neighborhood. Training included Spanish and Quechua languages. Assignment was in the town of Tambo Grande, Piura, Peru. Work involved Business Coaching, and Youth Entrepreneurship. He was a founding member of Peace Corps Peru’s Diversity Task Force, and a member of the Peer Support Network. While there, Craig wrote an article titled “Being Black in Peru: My Experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer.” Interview discusses experiences in training, service, post service, return to Peru, and issues faced by a black volunteer in Peru.Interview Accession
