Interview Summary
Growing up in Portland, Kentucky in the 1950s and 1960s, summer recreation in Portland Park, parent's strict rules and supervision, strict supervision in schools with no absenteeism, fear of river which was off limits, Portland Canal (barge watching but no swimming), Portland kid's reputation for being wild and tough, popularity of neighborhood store, parent's stricter control of girls than boys (Molly Leonard's daughters-fourth generation Portlanders), informal separation of the races, parent's greater fears for their children now, kids' greater freedom from supervision now-- Jefferson County.Interview Accession
