Interview Summary
aura Paxson served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay from 1985 to 1987. Laura served as a Health Sector volunteer. She served with her former husband. They received training as EMTs prior to service. When couples were asked to serve in different sectors Laura stayed in the Health sector in rural health education. She worked on vaccine programs while her language skills improved. Paraguay is a bilingual country; the people speak Spanish and Guarani. She walked to tiny towns with an unofficial counterpart. One of the mayors asked her to teach First Aid to the mothers. They hosted a film night to raise funds for first aid kits. The local woman were curious how she and her husband did not have children. Laura explained the concept of birth control and using the rhythm method. Peace Corps service taught Laura what she wanted to do in life.Interview Accession
