Interview with Charles John St. Pierre, July 27, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Charles St. Pierre served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Albania, from January 2019 through March 2020, in the Education Program. Charlie had an interest in Peace Corps since high school. Travel during college sparked an interest in the Balkans, so he applied and was selected to serve with Albania Group 22. Training began in Elbasan. After a few days they were separated into smaller groups, and Charlie went to Librazhd. There he stayed with a host family, and studied Albanian language. Charlie was assigned to Halit Uruçi elementary / middle school in Belsh, to assist local teachers. Secondary projects included a summer basketball camp, and renovation of the school gym. After an earthquake in November 2019, Charlie organized a humanitarian visit for his students to a displaced persons’ camp. Along with other PCVs, he participated in training local educators in helping kids deal with the trauma of a natural disaster. In his spare time, he traveled extensively through the country. The COVID19 evacuation cut Charlie’s service short. After returning home he had an opportunity to teach English in Kiev, Ukraine, and was evacuated from there due to the Russian invasion.Interview Accession
