Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Patricia Deignan, Ukraine 2017-2019. Deignan retired work in the San Jose City Attorney’s Office to join Peace Corps where she joined the economic development office in Kalush, Ukraine. There, Deignan developed tourism destinations including a cross-cultural heritage center where, among other things, a culinary arts program was given. She also was instrumental in a city-wide project to clean up the Jewish cemetery in the hopes of it becoming a part of a heritage tour in the Carpathian Mountain region. “Peace Corps plants seeds,” says Deignan. She presented workshops for local entrepreneurs on grant-writing skills, and developed, along with her peers, a retreat for fellow community development Volunteers placed in municipal offices regarding budgets, elections and strategic planning in Ukraine. Deignan found “forever friends” with other Volunteers where age and gender didn’t matter. As for personal growth, Deignan learned to withstand pain when she broke her shoulder while walking on an icy sidewalk. She was medivacced to the States, thus leaving Ukraine 4 months earlier than planned.
