Interview with Lloyd Kreitzer, April 27, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Lloyd Kreitzer joined the Peace Corps in 1967 after seeing JFK speak at his university while he was in the front row as a member of the glee club. His training was held in Hawaii in Waipio, an isolated valley. Once in Malaysia, his country of service, he was stationed in Borneo. He recalled the conservative culture in Malaysia, and the powerful spiritual and communal aspects of the culture that he came to appreciate and respect in spite of their contrast to American norms. At the same time, he also became aware of the power of ethnic and religious discrimination. He worked on an agricultural station, leading a high school agricultural club and teaching farmers about fish ponds. One of his most memorable experiences was getting lost in the jungle with another PCV when they decided to hike two days to another PCVs house for Thanksgiving. As an independent seller at farmer’s markets in New Mexico, he fulfils the Third Goal by raising the awareness of his customers of global interconnectedness.
