Interview with Albert Benjamin "Happy" Chandler, June 11, 1981
Project: A. B. "Happy" Chandler: The Dr. Charles P. Roland Interviews
Interview Summary
Chandler begins the interview by addressing and explaining his innocence in light of several accusations of corruption throughout his political career. Controversies with a swimming pool built in his backyard, tires bought during times of rubber rationing during World War II, a cabin built with donations from state employees, money made through a deal between a wholesale liquor distributor and a whiskey distillery, and rumors of nepotism and favoritism in his administration. Additionally, Chandler explains his stance on gambling as governor. Chandler dismisses claims that he had special interests as governor, and details the difficulties of rewarding supporters without being unfair to non-supporters. To conclude the interview, Chandler illustrates some of the most implausible rumors started about his finances.Interview Accession
