Interview with Jeff Schatzman, June 11, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jeff Schatzman served in Jamaica 1969-1971 in the Language Arts sector. His job was to initiate Remedial Reading programs in four Primary schools located in Clark’s Town, Jackson Town, Stewart Town and Duncans. On Fridays, he took his students to a nearby beach for swimming lessons. After his return to the United States, he found it difficult to find employment due to uncertainty regarding his middling draft number. So, he contacted the Jamaican Ministry of Education and was offered the task of developing a systematic reading program for all 800 primary schools. He returned to Kingston where he stayed for another 18 years! With the help of local writers, the Doctor Bird Reading Series came into being. Jeff attributed his two years in the Peace Corps as the foundation of this long-term work in Jamaica. He offers the advice to “go for it” to those interested in joining Peace Corps.
