Interview Summary

Dorothy Perkins was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1930. In this interview she discusses growing up in Fayette County, her family, and her education at schools in Lexington. She talks about the types of entertainment that were available during her childhood. She discusses her ethnic background, her children, and grandchildren.

Perkins describes the East End neighborhood, including churches, restaurants, and other businesses. She describes the experience of going to the various theaters in Lexington. She talks about the jobs she has held over the years, and talks about running a business out of her home selling candy and food to neighborhood children.

Perkins discusses the state of race relations in Lexington during her childhood, and discusses her experiences with segregation. She talks about leaders in the African American community. She gives advice to young people about staying out of trouble, based on her own experiences.
