Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
David Dolinger served in the Republic of Korea, 1978-1980. Training occurred in Cheonju, were he received his Korean name, Im Daeoon (forest big cloud) and training in Korean and TB control. He was assigned to his site, Yeongam in South Jeolla province. At the Yeongam County health center, he performed his duties as a TB control worker. David became involved in the May 18, 1980 Democratic Uprising, in Gwangju. After refusing to leave the city, as asked by the U.S. embassy, he translated for the western press and witnessed the day-to-day activities in the city. David was forced to resign by his Country Director but stayed in Korea for another year. David said PC is a great concept. However, he believes teaching English has minimal impact and is not needed. He believes that metrics are lacking, and volunteers generally are too young and inexperienced to effect impact.Interview Accession
