Interview Summary

Joe Altimari is a northeast Philly native attending Father Judge High School who fought in Vietnam for the United States Army from June 1969 to May 1970. After learning his draft number was 12, Joe enlisted in the Army in October of 1968. He figured if had to go over, he might as well have some choice of what he did. He worked as a radio repairmen and door gunner for the 132nd ASHC based out of Chu Lai, Vietnam in I Corps. Joe flew over 75 combat missions and was awarded a Bronze Star, three awards of the Air Medal, one with a "V" Device for heroism, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Crewmember Flight Wings. In the interview, Joe discussed his life growing up in Northeast Philadelphia and attending Father Judge High School. Joe shared his experiences joining the Army, and about his role working with Chinook Helicopters. He shared his thoughts on fighting and living in I Corp and explore his duties as a 19 year old platoon sergeant. He finished with speaking about home and his experiences as a veteran, and coming to grips with the aftermath of the war.
