Interview Summary

This interview with University of Kentucky alumna and former college tennis player Dr. Jackie Gibson begins with a discussion of her high school tennis career, including winning her title of Kentucky State High School Doubles Champion. She talks about the style of her tennis game and discusses the influential role that Coach Carl Hoppe of the Bluegrass Racquet Club had on her tennis game. Next, Gibson talks about being recruited for the University of Kentucky women's tennis team before the enforcement of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, which meant that she did not get an athletic scholarship. She also talks about the difficulties of balancing academics and her life as an athlete. Gibson also talks in detail about the affect that Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 had on the university's tennis team. She talks about the difficulties of traveling to matches on a limited budget, as well as the merging of the men?s and women?s athletic departments at the university. She also recalls her impressions of her coaches and teammates. Next, Gibson talks about the facilities and the limited amount of equipment that the University of Kentucky provided to her and her teammates. Gibson then discusses moving into the position of assistant coach after her eligibility to compete as an athlete expired. After finishing her degree, Gibson was admitted to medical school and pursued her career as a physician and faculty member at the University of Kentucky.
