Interview Summary
In this interview with James W. Martin, former director of the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Kentucky, Martin discusses his work in Turkey during Reconstruction after World War II. Martin went to Turkey as part of the Marshall Plan (also called the European Recovery Program). He discusses why he was chosen for this program and why he accepted the offer, though he had not accepted similar offers previously.Throughout the interview, Martin discusses various aspects of the Turkish government and economy, including the government's attempt to control certain types of manufacturing, Turkish personnel administration, and the issues involved in attempting to pass and execute legislation. He discusses the quality of administration within the Turkish government, and talks about the results of his report. He talks about the culture he experienced while living in Turkey, and discusses how his work impacted his later career.
