Interview Summary

Luis Valadez is from Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Columbia College with a B.A in Arts and Poetry and from Eare Naropa University with a Master’s in Fine Arts. After graduation, he taught in Chicago public schools. While tutoring he met an RPCV and had a roommate who encouraged him to apply to Peace Corps at 30 years old. Assigned to teach English in China, he trained in Chengdu. He appreciated the DIVE model: describe, interpret, validate, evaluate approach to learning how to adapt to a different culture from his own. Luis was assigned to Neijiang University where he taught English and American culture. His classes had 50-70 students. He had an “English corner,” office hours, and holiday celebrations. Luis learned how culture and conditions are an interchanging dynamic of ever-changing circumstances. He discovered his Mexican-Americanism in American context to recognize he is American. Later as staff, he assisted with the evacuation of Volunteers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
