Interview Summary

Maeve Hoppen talks about being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bipolar type II. She talks about the process she went through trying to get diagnosed. She describes the symptoms, characteristics, and definitions of each disorder. She talks about seeing several therapists, her struggle to be diagnosed, and her eventual attempts at various treatments. Hoppen talks about how her family and friends have reacted to her diagnosis or to her talking about mental health and how her relationships have been affected by mental health issues. Hoppen talks about some of the terms regarding mental health that she finds offensive or insensitive. She talks about some of the societal stereotypes of various mental health issues and the effects of those stereotypes. Hoppen talks in detail about her experience with an intensive therapy program, as well as her experience being hospitalized for mental health issues.
