Interview Summary

This interview with resident of Prestonsburg (Ky.) Daniel Stephens begins with a description of when and where he was born. He talks about his childhood home with an emphasis on environmental aspects such as trash disposal and septic systems, as well as what he would do for recreation as a child. He then briefly talks about recycling materials such as clothes and home-building materials. Next, Stephen talks about growing up in a coal mining town in Eastern Kentucky. He recalls swimming in a nearby creek that frequently turned black with contamination from a nearby coal mine. He also briefly describes his family moving to Ohio. He also discusses his heart troubles and the reason behind his refusal to undergo surgery. Stephens also recalls two childhood accidents in which he broke bones. Finally, Stephens talks about his adult life, including his marriage and his favorite foods.
