Interview Summary

In this interview, Jack B. Hall, who was the University of Kentucky Dean of Students at the time of the May 5, 1970, ROTC building burning, discusses how the University of Kentucky and Kentucky state administrators responded to the burning, his personal feelings regarding the nature of this response, and the alternative, more peaceful solutions, that Hall believes could have resulted on the week of May 5. More particular topics discussed include the presence of the state police and the National Guard on University of Kentucky?s campus, the overt surveillance of student activist groups by University of Kentucky staff members, other burnings on University of Kentucky?s campus that occurred during the student protests, the notorious, May 5th University of Kentucky Board of Trustees Meeting, and the careful and continual process of evaluation of student activist actions, and corollary administrative responses, undertaken by University of Kentucky administrators such as Hall before, during, and after the burning.
