Interview Summary

In this second interview with Lois Scott, she continues discussing her participation in the Brookside Mine Strike. She talks about a standoff against Basil Collins and the scabs and gun thugs. She talks about the women being armed with sticks, mace, and guns. She talks about incidents of violence during the standoff. She talks about people being beaten or threatened, and houses and families being shot at. Scott describes the murder of Lawrence Jones by Billy Bruner. She talks about elections in Harlan County and how they are intrinsically connected to the coal industry. She talks about cover-ups perpetrated by the mining companies, Norman Yarborough, and Judge Byrd Hogg. Scott talks about her time in jail. She discusses many incidents with the police on the picket lines. Scott talks about receiving criticism from neighbors regarding her participation in the strike, news coverage of the strike, and the reasons for starting the Brookside Women's Club.
