Interview Summary
Joan C. Callahan, born in 1946, entered a convent right after her high school graduation. She was there from 1964 until 1971. After leaving the convent, she went to Southeastern Massachusetts University and graduated with a degree in Philosophy, and she eventually completed her M.A. in Humanities from Simmons College, as well as another M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Maryland. She states that she was the first member of her family to go to college much less get a masters or a doctorate.Callahan began her teaching career at Louisiana State University in 1982 as a teaching assistant, but when she earned her Ph.D. she was promoted to Assistant Professor. During the LSU budget crisis of 1986, Callahan began looking for other academic opportunities and she was drawn to the University of Kentucky where she is now an Associate Professor of Philosophy. In 1991, she was awarded Outstanding Academic Book from Choice Magazine for the book she co-authored entitled Preventing Birth: Contemporary Methods and Related Moral Controversies, published in 1989.
