Interview Summary

Gertrude Benedict shares childhood memories of her brother Wilson Wyatt, and discusses their parents. She discusses his early career, in particular his interest in law, his liberalism, and his marriage to Anne Kinnard Duncan in 1930. Benedict describes her brother's campaigns for mayor of Louisville, Kentucky in 1941 and for lieutenant governor of Kentucky in 1959, touching on the factionalism of the Democratic Party involving Happy Chandler, Earle Clements, and Bert Combs that forced Wyatt to step down from seeking the governorship. Benedict explains the priority of public service and the necessity of private life for her brother, names his service as housing administrator in Washington, D.C. from 1945 to 1947 as his greatest accomplishment, and discusses the guilt he felt for letting his work keep him from his family.
