Interview Summary

Gretchen E. Schafft, an anthropologist based in the Washington, D.C. area, is interviewed by Willis Sibley about her career in anthropology and her involvement in the Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists. She discusses her educational background, receiving her doctorate in anthropology from the Catholic University of America and her post-doctorate in health sciences from Johns Hopkins University. Schafft also talks about the founding of the Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists (WAPA) in 1976 and how the group gained support through donations. She tells Sibley about the efforts of WAPA to alternate between male and female as well as academic and non-academic presidents in order to create equal representation. Schafft recalls how WAPA evolved over time, gradually adding professional resources and workshops so anthropologists could find careers outside of academia. Schafft and Sibley discuss the future of WAPA and what they believe it must do in order to stay relevant, particularly to the new generation of professional anthropologists.
