Interview Summary
John Paul Stevens, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, discusses his 1947 clerkship with Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge, Jr. Stevens discusses how he became a law clerk, cases that were decided during his clerkship, and his general experience clerking for the Justice. Rutledge was born in Cloverport, Kentucky and lived in the Commonwealth during his early childhood years. In 1939, he was confirmed as a Circuit Court Judge for the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, where he served alongside Kentucky native Judge Fred Vinson. President Roosevelt elevated Rutledge to the Supreme Court in 1943, where he served until his death in 1949.Interview Accession
