Interview Summary

This interview with history professor Irfan Habib, begins with his childhood memories of Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh (India), including a story about his school song and the national flag changing from Great Britain to the Indian flag. He then talks about Muslims within the Indian independence movement. The interview then goes on to Habib's memories of the movement, including the changing of the school song. He delves into the topic of Marxism within the Indian independence movement and talks about the communal riots that occurred in 1946. Habib talks about how Indian independence and the partition of Pakistan personally affected his family and his involvement with the Student Federation of India. The two then talk about Aligarh Muslim University and the ways in which it changed after the partition of Pakistan. Finally, the two discuss the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
