Interview Summary
Born in 1888 in Columbus, OH, Summers moved to Philadelphia in 1918 to serve as one of three colored inspectors at Hog Island shipyard. He was a reporter for black newspapers during the 1920's. He was politically active, serving as state secretary for Al Smith's presidential campaign in 1928, and running for state legislature in 1934. Beginning in the 1930's, he became a union organizer for the CIO. He helped organize the Coatesville Steel Works in 1937.Interview Accession
