Interview with Deborah Moskovitz, January 27, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Deborah Moskovitz applied to the Peace Corps, after college graduation in 1991. Unable to serve in Africa because of allergies to antimalarial drugs, she accepted a position in Honduras as an Agricultural Extensionist. To prepare, she volunteered at an arboretum and grew garden vegetables. Training included Spanish, Honduran culture, visits to volunteers, and agriculture: terracing, barriers, ditches, making equipment, and planting. Assigned to Concepción, she introduced herself to surrounding farmers, assisted planting, suggested soybeans, natural fertilizers, erosion reduction, and pest management. She secured a $500 AID grant for two “field trips”, one to an ideal farm, and one to an agricultural school. Electricity arrived her second year, but plans for a slideshow failed due to repeated blackouts. She shows a hat from a Guatemalan Holy Week expedition and a mahogany rose, and discusses her reciprocated love for the people, vacations, health issues, security issues, re-acculturating, and participation in SacValley RPCV's in Sacramento, CA. She feels her success as a PCV was due to “going Honduran.”Interview Accession
