Interview with Kate Raftery, March 16, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Kate Raftery met PCVs in rural Paraiba, Brazil while on a high school exchange program. Kate was teaching high school Latin American history when she realized she needed more real-life experience in the region to be authentic and effective as a teacher when she applied to Peace Corps. She was invited to an agriculture project in Paraguay to work as a home extension agent. She trained in Ponce, Puerto Rico studying both Spanish and Guarani. Kate was based in Itacurubi del Rosario with the Agricultural Extension Office. She worked with a 4 H model to develop knowledge and skills with youth, especially girls, and mothers to create positive change in their lives. Her area of responsibility included various settlements within 3-4 miles walking distance. She learned that development requires listening, understanding of local felt needs, and instilling local ownership. During a third year she became a PCVL.
