Interview with Hillary Gularte, April 19, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Hillary Gularte, an Alaska Native, served in Costa Rica, 2008-2010, working in youth in development. Training site was Patarrá. Hillary said the language training classes were too basic and didn’t supply language that would be used on the job. She said the project management training, however, was good. Permanent site was Liberia, Guanacaste. Hillary's national counterpart was child services or PANI. She worked in its youth homes and also partnered with local schools. She and another volunteer created an HIV-AIDS/Safer Sex Practices workshop which they facilitated at various sites around the country. Hillary spent 1/3 of her time on this project. One of Hillary's most moving moments was a visit to the San Blas Islands near Panama and her connection with the Indigenous people of the Kuna Nation. She found parallels between their culture and that of the Indigenous people of Alaska. PC makes the world smaller, she said.
