Interview with Roberta R. Nutt, April 5, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Roberta Nutt, Malaysia 1966-1968, and her husband joined PC as a couple in Malaysia. She was trained as a math teacher, learning current math techniques. Because there were no words at that time for math concepts in Malay, she taught in English. Nutt and her husband were posted in Kuantan, in Eastern Malaysia where she taught in the Methodist Girls’ Secondary School. Nutt was required to keep daily lesson plans in an official ledger open to governmental inspection. After school, she frequently “had tea” with other teachers, embedding her into the local society. In addition to teaching, Nutt joined a community theater group, assisting with creating props for productions. During the summer, she and her husband worked with the Ministry of Education in Kuala Lumpur. Among her accomplishments, Nutt considers the high grades that her students earned on external exams indications of her success as a teacher, and her immersion into the multi-cultural society in which she lived and worked. As a result of her Peace Corps experience, Nutt became “a citizen of the world,” with new awareness of “otherness,” perspectives that translated into her career in psychology.
