Interview Summary

Huong Diep served as a Peace Corps volunteer in a health program in Peru from 2003-2005 and as a psychologist at Peace Corps headquarters from 2015-2017. She talks about Peace Corps’ return to Peru after a 28-year hiatus (1974-2002) and her experiences in living as an outsider in a small community in the Andes. She also discusses her Vietnamese American family’s opposition to her joining the Peace Corps, recognizing her differences from other volunteers, and Peruvians thinking that she was Peruvian-Asian. She also talks about balancing competing perspectives on the role of psychological counseling in Peace Corps and issues related to predicting who will have a successful Peace Corps experience. She suggests that the opportunities provided by Peace Corps help produce American leaders.
