Interview Summary

Charles Talbert, an acquaintance of Chandler's and a professor of history at the University of Kentucky, begins the interview by talking about an article that the interviewer wrote about the political career of Chandler. The Democratic Primaries of Chandler's first bid for governor of Kentucky are described. Talbert's dealings with the state government in obtaining his teaching certificate are also mentioned. Additionally, the interviewee briefly discusses his parents and their political beliefs. Talbert's first impressions of Chandler are examined. Talbert then describes the life of Frank McVey, a former president of the University of Kentucky who supported Chandler. Chandler's time spent in law school at the University of Kentucky is explored. The life of a political aide of Chandler's, John DeMoisey, is examined. Talbert illustrates what his life was like during Chandler's second gubernatorial administration in the mid-1950s. Talbert then evaluates Chandler's influence and legacy upon the state of Kentucky. To conclude the interview, Talbert shares his brother-in-law's experience with a memorable political speech that Chandler gave in Carlisle, Kentucky, as well as a reflection upon Talbert's own recollection of a speech given by politician Frederick Wallace (who worked at Ellis Island and served in the Chandler administration of the 1930s).
