Interview Summary
At the time of this interview, David C. Scott was the president and chairman of the board of the Allis Chalmers Corporation. In this interview he discusses his years as an undergraduate at the University of Kentucky from 1936-1940. He talks about why he chose UK over other schools and gives his first impressions of the university. He talks about majoring in industrial chemistry.Scott talks about social life on campus, including dances and local hangouts. He talks about joining Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and discusses the role of Greek organizations on campus and among other student organizations. He talks about students' attitudes about politics, athletics, and the role of women on campus.
Scott discusses how he became involved in a research bureau at UK designed to implement buying standards for the state. He talks about how he came to lead this venture and became acquainted with politicians like Governor Happy Chandler in the process. He talks about beginning his own engineering company with other UK graduates and professors.
Scott discusses his role in the UK Alumni Association, the Annual Giving Fund, and the Development Council. He discusses the importance of alumni donations to the university in order to improve the quality of the school.
