Interview with Megan Legerski, February 10, 2023
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Megan Legerski served in Guyana, 2010-2012, teaching phonics and promoting literacy among teachers. She was in Region 2, a coastal area, for training which she said was constant activity. Her host family were Hindu rice farmers. Accordingly, she was treated to numerous Hindu festivals. Her permanent site was a remote community of 600 people reachable only by boat. She lived in government housing next to her school. After COS, Megan returned to Guyana and taught 2nd and 3rd grades at her former school for two years. She said she “had nothing but time” so she patiently “sat in the boredom.” She feels she had sustainable successes but remembers difficulty in forging relationships with local women. Megan has a Peace Corps family. Her grandmother, great uncle and husband all served. She is active in 3rd goal activities. She values the learned experience, inter-personal relationships, and perspective she gained through PC.Interview Accession
