Interview Summary

Saunders is the oldest living member of the Black community in Midway at the time of the interview. She discusses her early life and family, the work she did on a farm, as well as cooking, cleaning, and housekeeping. Saunders' father went to a Baptist church and her mother was a Methodist. She went to the Methodist church and says she is very religious. She worked for the missionary society for many years. She discusses her schooling, including her experience with segregation and integration. She describes going to church and her daily routine with her husband. Saunders discusses how courting worked and how her husband courted her. She talks about how she helped the rest of her family. They look at the McIntyre family record. She tells a story about her father when he was enslaved. Her family has a big family reunion every year. She describes holiday traditions, including Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's, and birthdays.
