Interview Summary

Interview with American inventor and audio engineer Michael Dorrough. He discusses his start at RCA Studios and the professional atmosphere he witnessed there. He compares recording in the early and mid 20th century to recording at the end of the 20th Century. He discusses the introduction of tape to the recording studios and how the studios handled the advancement of technology. Dorrough describes how the corporate growth of record labels and distributors along with the decline of independent record distributors contributed to the lack of experimentation and creativity of music in the late 20th century. He discusses the atmosphere of the studio at Motown Records and the way the studios tried to sell the artists. He discusses the atmosphere at Emperor Productions compared to that of other studios, and the exploitation of artists in the recording business. Dorrough discusses various recording engineers who produced great records in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s but who are now forgotten.
