Interview Summary

Bet Ison describes her early life growing up the child of two social workers moving around the country, with influence from her family's Swedish-American roots, and then marrying her husband, Cecil Ison, who was from Eastern Kentucky. She speaks at length about the differences between her own upbringing and the cultural tradition of Eastern Kentucky, as well as the impact of the Vietnam War on her husband and his brothers. She discusses her evolution as a textile/quilt artist beginning in her forties, her home known as the "Home for Wayward Babydolls," the community of extended families in Eastern Kentucky, and her quilts addressing post-traumatic stress and war.
