Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Evonne Weatherby (Carter) grew up in California, including living rough camping and fishing. She was a fan of JFK and wanted to do something for the world. Evonne served in three countries: Paraguay, Malawi, and Ukraine. She trained in Ponce, Puerto Rico for Paraguay. Evonne worked in Health education - hand washing and boiled water - in Chore in the Eje Norte District for six months. Moved because of security to Qiindy. Engaged with K-12 school: nutrition and cooking as well as an art club for traditional embroidery. She also work with a health center: dental care, gardens - fruits and vegetables. Taught an English class. In Malawi, Evonne was a teacher trainer of English and life skills with six villages. Teachers became trainers! She also engaged with many other activities: wildlife club, school garden, solar ovens, tree plantings, credit cooperative, and sewing school uniforms by students as a revenue source. In Ukraine, Evonne worked in TEFL at the university in Kremenchuk. Taught modern methods of teaching.
