Interview with Lillian Mizrahi, November 30, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Responding to a Peace Corps “Baby Boomers We Want You” postcard, Lillian Mizrahi served in FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), n/k/a North Macedonia, 2009-2011. Her assignment was community economic development; she used her production background to work with NGO Koneckt, securing funding for other groups by organizing events and conferences. Lillian said her cultural training was valuable in understanding FYROM’s Macedonian, Albanian and Roma cultures. She studied Macedonian, a Cyrillic language. Lillian’s service was centered in Skopje, the capital. Lillian helped with a PC Corner library, a GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) event, a national spelling bee, and teaching English to 9-1-1 Center employees. She counts as a victory helping a young gay man escape bias in FYROM by assisting him to go to university in Switzerland. Advice to volunteers: think carefully about where you want to be, including weather, cultural differences and wardrobe. “It’s all in the details."
